The loudest AI ethics conversations are about scenarios that may or may not arrive — superintelligence, mass unemployment, x-risk. They make for good essays and bad daily guidance. The harder, slower questions about AI are already in the room with you when you open a chat window.

This is a short field guide to five of those questions. None of them have clean answers. Sitting with them honestly, even for a minute, will change how you use the tools — and that, in turn, is most of what individual ethics is actually for.

1. Whose work did this model learn from?

Every general-purpose AI model was trained on enormous amounts of text and images, much of it scraped without explicit permission. When a model writes a poem in the style of a living author, paints in the style of a working illustrator, or summarizes a journalist’s reporting — it is drawing on labour that someone did, often without consent and almost always without compensation.

This is not a settled question. Lawsuits are working through courts in several jurisdictions. New licensing frameworks are emerging. In the meantime, the question worth asking yourself is small: is this use closer to learning from work, or to replacing it? Using a model to understand a topic is one thing. Using a model to mass-produce a thousand articles in someone else’s style is another. Most of us are nowhere near the second category, but the question is worth carrying.

2. When is automation a kindness, and when is it a removal?

Most AI use cases sit on a spectrum. At one end: removing dull, repetitive work so a person can do their actual job better. At the other end: removing a person from a job entirely. The same workflow can be either, depending on what happens to the time saved.

The case study most operators are still working through is customer support. An AI triage layer can free up support staff for the harder, more rewarding cases — or it can be the first step toward halving the support team. The technology is the same. The choice is human.

Worth asking, before you build the next workflow: what is the recovered time being spent on, and is the person whose work was automated better off than they were before?

3. What happens when the model is confidently wrong?

Modern AI models are unusually good at producing answers that sound right. They are not as good at knowing when they are wrong. This combination — confident voice, occasional fabrication — is unlike most tools we have used before.

This matters most in domains where being wrong is expensive: medicine, law, finance, education. It also matters in subtler ways. A summary that omits a small but crucial nuance shapes the reader’s view of a topic. A model-drafted email that softens a difficult message changes the conversation that follows it.

The discipline this asks for is verification. Treat any specific factual claim from a model as a starting point, not an endpoint. Click the link. Read the source. Especially when the claim is the kind of thing you would have wanted to be true.

4. Are we training ourselves to outsource judgment?

This is the question most worth sitting with privately. Tools change us. The calculator changed how we do arithmetic; the GPS changed how we know cities; the smartphone changed how we remember phone numbers. AI is going to change something larger and slower: the muscle of thinking through a problem from scratch.

That muscle is not unimportant. The ability to sit with a hard question, to draft and rewrite a paragraph until it says what you mean, to work through a calculation without help — these are not just productivity skills. They are how we develop opinions, taste, and the experience of struggling with something difficult.

There is no right amount of AI assistance for these tasks. The question is whether you notice when you have stopped doing them at all. Students, writers, teachers, and decision-makers should all be quietly checking on this in themselves.

5. Who is left out of the room when AI is built?

Most of the major AI labs are concentrated in a few cities, staffed by people with a narrow demographic profile, and shaped by a small number of investors. The models reflect this. They are unusually good at English. They are noticeably worse at most other languages. Their default cultural references skew young, urban, American, and technical.

This shows up in small ways: translations that flatten a culture, recommendations that assume a particular kind of life, examples that exclude whole populations. It also shows up in the bigger ways — who gets a job interview, who gets approved for a loan, who is recognized by a face-detection system. The harms accumulate in the places that were already underserved.

There is no single fix. There are partial ones: better-curated training data, more diverse teams, evaluation benchmarks that include more languages and cultures, and accountability when models systematically fail particular groups. As a user, the small contribution you can make is to flag failures when you see them, in writing, to the people who can change the system.

A note on where this leaves us

These questions are not arguments against using AI. They are arguments against using it thoughtlessly. The tools we have are powerful, useful, and here to stay. The question of whether they are good for individual lives and communities depends, mostly, on the small daily decisions of the people using them — what they automate, what they verify, what they refuse, and what they teach their children.

None of this requires a degree in ethics. It requires the same thing any honest practice does: paying attention.
